The art of being an effective leader

Posted on March 24, 2020

Effective leadership skills are one of the most valuable skills you could have in life and business. Leading is the art of motivating, inspiring and directing a group of people to work together seamlessly as a team. Whether you are sitting in a conference room or delegating work at an employees desk, an effective leader knows the best way to get the task done, every time. If the skill of leadership is pursued with practice and diligence, it can truly help advance people’s personal and professional lives by leaps and bounds.

Establish a solid goal

Before we begin, it is important to establish what a good leader actually looks like and the characteristics he or she must possess. A good leader must be goal-oriented, hardworking, willing to serve others, encouraging, a wise decision maker and a responsible person. Some people are born with these qualities and some people must work hard to attain them. The first step to becoming an effective leader is to successfully lead yourself towards your goals. Lead by setting the right examples and achieving your own personal goals. Decide what type of leader you wish to be and then set precedent by making strides towards that goal.

Accept failure as a part of the process

Failure is an unavoidable stepping stone on the path that leads to success. Your decisions and actions will not always have an immediately observable positive outcome. Do not take this to mean that your approach has failed. The key difference between a good leader and a great one, is how they react to failure. Accept and embrace your failures, thus gaining the ability to observe rationally what went wrong and how it can be fixed. As a leader, your job is not just interacting with the team in meeting rooms, it is to stay up-to-date with their work and provide feedback and encouragement wherever required.

Transform me into we

The most effective way to influence and motivate others is by connecting with them and understanding their needs. Every individual has different hopes and dreams, what makes a positive impact on one person, might negatively affect another. People trust and believe in their leaders because they know that the leaders have their best interests at heart. As a leader, your thinking process should be one that encompasses and is beneficial to the entire group. Be approachable and friendly so that your team feels free to provide you with feedback and trusts you to do what is right for them and the team.

Effective leadership is a skill that can be learned, practiced and improved upon. In life, it is only natural that each of us will at some point be called upon to lead in some capacity or the other. This is why it is vital for all of us to learn the art of leadership and hone this skill at every opportunity we can get.
